This paper frames the issues related to the study of contexts known from the archaeological researches conducted between XIXth and XXth century in the main Etruscan sites of the Po Valley (i.e. Bologna, Marzabotto, Adria, Spina). The necropolis of Valle Trebba in Spina (end of the VIth - IIIrd century BC) is taken as a case study. The area, dug between the ’20s and ’30s of the XXth century, has su ered the lack of a general plan and of a comprehensive study of the burial ground, which a ected the research for decades. The analysis of archive data, combined with the systematic study of burial contexts, led not only to the reconstruction of the missing plan, but also to attempt a recon- struction of the ancient landscape and of dynamics of occupation of the funeral area. Moreover, the development of a GIS allowed to bene t from a tool that implemented the data returned by the topographic documentation with a wide selection of georeferenced photographic and cartographic information. Thanks to this tool, we can insert the necropolis of Valle Trebba in a wider area and we can deal with issues related to the ancient landscape, such as routes within and outside the necropolis.
